A BRIEF HISTORY……
Franschhoek, Afrikaans for “French Corner”, is a small town in the Western Cape, and one of the oldest towns in South Africa with a population of just over 20 000.
Franschhoek’s original inhabitants were the Khoisan, now mostly extinct, their descendants continue to live in the area as mixed race (Khoisan and French/Dutch) people. In 1688, almost 300 French Huguenots, fleeing France after King Louis XIV banned Protestantism, arrived at the Cape Of Good Hope by ship and were given the Franschhoek Valley to settle by the Dutch authorities
Establishing farms and businesses, bringing with them the French culture and traditions and naming their farms after area’s they had left behind in France. First settling over 300 years ago they transformed this spectacular valley with their influence and knowledge of wine making, now dubbed the “Valley of Dreams”.
Once a quiet country retreat, Franschhoek has evolved into one of South Africa’s most sought after residential addresses. Notable for having some of the top restaurants in the country, together with an exceptional wine culture, boutique shopping, architectural and natural beauty.
Franschhoek has been described as the “Food & Wine Capital” of South Africa, and making the list in 2022 by TIME Magazine as one of the top 50 places to visit in the world
