A BRIEF HISTORY…..
Franschhoek, Afrikaans for “French Corner”, is a small town in the Western Cape, and one of the oldest towns in South Africa with a population of just over 20 000.
Franschhoek’s original inhabitants were the Khoisan, now mostly extinct, their descendants continue to live in the area as mixed race (Khoisan and French/Dutch) people. In 1688, almost 300 French Huguenots, fleeing France after King Louis XIV banned Protestantism, arrived at the Cape OfGood Hope by ship and were given the Franschhoek Valley to settle by the Dutch authorities
